Investigate the two types of sight defect- long-sightedness and short sightedness.

Find the following information:

Long sightedness or Hyperopia

a.       what causes the defect

Hyperopia has many different causes with the main one being genetics (the problem is inherited from your family). Other causes are diabetes, microphthalmia (small eye syndrome) and fovea hypoplasia (a condition where there is a problem with the blood vessels in the retina)

b.      the symptoms displayed

The main symptoms that are displayed by a patient diagnosed with Hyperopia are persistent headaches, eyestrain, inability to work on computers, excessive blinking and dislike or avoidance of reading.

c.       propose what sort of lens may be used to correct each vision.

The lens that would be most suitable to correct Hyperopia is a convex lens. A convex lens is chosen because it moves the image of a distant object forward onto the retina, therefore giving the patient a closer focus or an object.

Short-sightedness or Myopia

a.       what causes the defect

Myopia has a wide range of causes. Some of the main ones are genetics, near work e.g sitting close to the tv and working low light working conditions e.g reading in the dark.

b.      the symptoms displayed

The main symptoms that are displayed by a myopic patient include blurred distance vision, frequent eye squinting and eyestrain.

c.       propose what sort of lens may be used to correct each vision

The type of lens that is used to correct myopic vision is a concave lens. This is because a concave lens bends the incoming light rays slightly outwards therefore an image is produced further back on the retina.

Fibre Optic technology offers many advantages when used in medical applications.

a. Describe how optical fibre may be used in medical applications

Fibre optic technology is used in many medical instruments. One of the most popular being the otoscope (which is used by a physician to see inside a paitents ear) and one other example being the endoscope (a device which enables a physician to see inside a paitent before they operate on them)

b. Identify the traditional medical techniques that optical fibres may replace

The traditional medical techniques that have been replaced by optical fibres provide an easier and less painful surgical experience for the paitent. For example one such medical technique that has been replaced by optical fibre technology is open heart surgery. By now using a medical instrument that uses optical fibre technology such as the endoscope physicians can now view the organs and vessels before they conduct surgery, as opposed to before this technology was introduced when the physician would have had to make several incisions to the paitent before they could view any organs or vessels.

c. Evaluate the benefits of fibre optic technology to medecine

Fibre optical technology provides many great benefits to medecine and medical instrumentation. By now using optical fibre in medical instruments it replaces traditional medical techniques (such as open heart surgery) which provides a much less daunting surgical experience for both doctor and paitent. Without optical fibre technolgy surgery would be  more innacurate and more dangerous.

Refelctive Journal 5

  • What influences your values about issues relating to your life?

The media influences my values to my life just like seeing people that are different like different race or religion and when I see them I straight away think of what the media has portrayed them as eg poor bombings, shootings etc and that’s why the media has a big impact on my values to other races and religions.

  • Do you ever compare images/values presented by the media to those of the bible? If so why? If not why not?

I don’t because I don’t know much images or values from the bible which is bad for me so i really can’t compare media from the bible in my case.

Has this project challenged you to examine your values? Why / Why not

Yes it has because i’ve just realised the media has a huge affect on my life because they and especially today our think pair share activity with those images we were given and they were something completely different to what us students thought it would be.

Refelctive Joural 4

  • How do you feel the media portrays social justice issues?

They portray it in a negative aspect because whenever there is a social justice issue its always bad and there is never a good social justice interview and the positive impact it has on the community.

  • Has it been difficult to find articles on social justice issues why/why not?

It’s been easy because our article is Sonny Bill Williams and its a present issue and there’s more articles and more facts given out to use in my groups media watch presentation.
Do you think that the media operates from a moral framework? Give evidence by using your research.

The media never has a moral framework with their articles because if there selling money their happy. A issue would be is Sonny Bill Williams which im researching now for my project the media makes Sonny Bill look like a coward for walking out of the bulldogs and He isn’t turning up to French Rugby training but he probaly has his own reasons for not going and the public gets the wrong veiw of that by thinking hes a coward and he’s just there for the money.

1. Open and read the “How to write a critique” document in the resources menu.

A critique involves identifying critical things to say about an article and resisting the temptation to describe rather than analyse.

2. Outline the FOUR stages in a critique. The four stages are Introduction, summary, analysis, evaluation.

3. Can a critique be positive? Discuss. Yes a critique can be positive because it must show both sides of an argument.

4. Critique the accuracy of the following articles: These articles are both obviously fake. However, they are both very convincing articles and some uneducated people in those areas may actually believe it.
